Pregnant and Parenting Students
The University of Northern Iowa supports the academic success of all students. Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex, this includes discrimination against pregnant and parenting students.
Accommodations
Students may request accommodations as a result of pregnancy, childbirth, or related conditions. Accommodations will vary from student to student. Accommodations may include:
- Excusing absences due to pregnancy, or related conditions
- Flexible deadlines for work submissions
- Rescheduling tests and exams
- Providing larger desks or chairs
- Providing alternatives to make up missed work.
To request accommodations, students should contact Student Accessibility Services and employees should contact HRS.
Childcare at UNI
UNI’s Child Development Center (UNI CDC) is a child care resource for faculty, staff and students at UNI. The CDC is part of the College of Education and provides quality childcare. Visit cdc.uni.edu for more information about availability, hours and rates.
Nursing Mothers and Lactation Rooms
UNI is committed to supporting student parents. There are five private lactation rooms for mothers on the UNI campus. A Key Request Form can be completed online to gain access to the room. For additional information about each room, please refer to the lactation room procedure and rules.

- 033 Nielsen Field House
- 030 Maucker Union
- 146 & 608 Schindler | Both rooms lock from the inside so a key is not needed.
