Prevention & Education

Working toward the ultimate goal of ending these issues at UNI, the following education initiatives are focused on empowering UNI's community members.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. OCRC is hosting a variety of events throughout the month to raise awareness of resources that are available if you or a loved one has been impacted by sexual assault. Check out our calendar of events below to learn more!

April 30th: Denim Day: Wear Denim!

In 1999, the Italian Supreme Court overruled a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans at the time of her assault. The judges argued that she must have had to help the perpetrator remove them, implying consent. This later became known as the “jeans alibi”. The next day, the women of the Italian Parliament wore jeans to demonstrate solidarity with the victim. Since then, Denim Day has been an annual campaign around the world that works to bring awareness to victim blaming and harmful myths that surround sexual assault.
We encourage everyone to wear denim on April 30th to show your support for survivors and visit OCRC’s table in Maucker Union from 11 AM-1 PM to learn more about Denim Day, view our tapestry collage, and enjoy a sweet treat.
